CSPA-NYS Call for Board Members

In accordance with procedures outlined in association bylaws, CSPA-NYS fills Executive Board positions through a process of elections and appointments, managed by the Elections Committee, chaired by the Past President. Executive Board members are elected by a majority of the current CSPA-NYS membership. 

Some board positions are elected, filled through an election open to active CSPA-NYS members. Other board positions are appointed, filled by presidential appointment with the advice and approval of a simple majority of the current Executive Board. Members interested in running for either an elected or appointed board position will follow the same nomination process.

Board Terms
Positions with a June start date will begin their term at the annual summer Executive Board Retreat. Positions with a November start date will begin their term at or shortly following the Annual Conference.

These officers are appointed by the President, with the advice and approval of a simple majority of the Executive Board.

Eligibility and Responsibilities

At the time of nomination and for the duration of their term, individuals must: be regular, student, honorary, or Crystal Circle members of CSPA-NYS; affiliated with an institution of post-secondary education in New York State*; receive supervisor support; and be committed to fulfilling the duties of the position for the length of the term. Nominees must also demonstrate an understanding of the CSPA-NYS mission, vision, equity and inclusion statement, as well as the knowledge and skills necessary to fulfill the responsibilities of the position.

*Exceptions to this affiliation requirement may be made by a simple majority of the Executive Board. Members who are employees of “for profit” organizations cannot use an Executive Board position to solicit business.

Candidates are encouraged to communicate their interest in a position with their supervisor and/or employer prior to accepting a nomination. Board officers who are elected or appointed to a role will be asked to have their supervisor and/or employer submit a letter of support.

+ General Responsibilities for all Executive Board Members

  • Attend all Board and committee meetings.
  • The majority of Board meetings are facilitated via video conference and others are in-person which may require travel during a business day at individual (or institution) expense. Due to COVID-19, there are no in-person meetings scheduled at this time.
  • Attend the CSPA-NYS Annual Conference at individual (or institution) expense.
  • Be informed about the organization’s Bylaws, mission, services, and policies.
  • Provide candid and constructive criticism, advice and comments.
  • Nominate prospective Board members and fill vacancies as needed.
  • Be a champion for the association and inform others about the organization.
  • Serve on committees and also take on special assignments.
  • Participate in the governance through election of new officers and other matters to fulfill the requirements under the articles of the organization.
  • Approve expenditures according to authorized limits and guidelines.
  • Stay well informed about the organization by carefully reading minutes of the Board Meeting, financial statements and other materials.
  • Take seriously the legal, fiscal, and ethical responsibilities the Board carries.
